Carriage House
Maintaining the old stable building in the area was one of the main ideas during the initial stage of design. Also in consideration was preserving the massive construction system of timber columns and girders supported by the thick masonry perimeter wall. With these premises, for the adaptive use as residential building and to comply with the building code regulations of light and air for dwelling units, excavating the section is the proposal. The internal courtyard provides the required clearances for the apartment windows, at the cellar level it becomes a communal space for tenants, in the floors above a catalyst for possible interaction between neighbors. A three story rooftop addition maximized the allowable square footage.
